The Art of Taming and Educating the Horse (1884)

  • Description

This is the 1884 Edition of The Art of Taming and Educating the Horse by D. Magner.

It is frequently referenced in a wide variety of books of the period as the best book available on horses and their management.

The first half of the book is devoted to Magner's techniques and practices for humanely training horses and treating horses that are difficult to control. He includes a lot of cases and examples of their real world application in cases studies from his own experience. There is a good bit of detail on the most practical and healthy arrangement, organization and management of stables.

The second half of the book is concerned with horse anatomy, diseases, injuries and the diagnosis and treatment of them. The amount of detail of horse internal anatomy is quite extensive.

Naturally the "medicines" he describes treatments for diseases and various injuries are obsolete by modern veterinary standards. However keep in mind that in a world trying to rebuild after a collapse there are unlikely to be any veterinary supplies, medicines of veterinarians. People trying to manage horses for motive power and/or transportation will be forced to use the resources, supplies and materials they have available. As would inevitably be the case once all salvaged medical/veterinary supplies were used up the choice would be use what is available or do nothing.

The original book was a single volume of a bit over 1100 pages. Such large books were fairly common in that period but for convenience I have split the original book into 3 volumes broken on chapter boundaries.

I reformatted the Table of Contents for each volume to reflect the contents of that volume. The title page is the same on each volume with the exception of an added line identifying the volume. I duplicated the entire index in each volume.

It is printed as paperback volumes in an 7" x 10" format. The 3 books together weigh about 5 lbs.

Shipping is Free in the Continental U.S. If you are outside the U.S. please contact me for shipping cost since this is a large heavy item.

NOTE: These are shipped in a 12"x9"x4" box and weigh 5 lbs. If you are outside the Continental U.S. PLEASE contact me about shipping before ordering. (I'm looking for a better sized box for these volumes but for now am using what I have on hand,)
